Should I branch out?...and How?
« on: February 07, 2013, 03:22:05 AM »
Hello Everyone- I've been billing for about 14 months now, and have 2 clients, both Chiropractors, 1 Full time and 1 part time. I've done some marketing, but not much. My full time client is going to be retiring and closing his office at the end of this year, and I'm gearing up to do some serious, consistent marketing soon. My question is this: Should I market to Chiropractors only, since that's the extent of my billing experience, or should I start marketing to MD's,  DO's and other health care professionals? I want to grow my business, but am not sure if the MD's are going to want to hire me, since my experience is Chiropractic only.  Any suggestions?

If you feel comfortable and/or have experience in other specialties, I say why not? :)   You can still market as a chiropractic billing specialist and take on other specialties. I did same thing. I started out with Mental health then branched out to pediatrics and family practice. It's all according to how comfortable you feel with another specialty.   Since your one client is retiring, ask him if he would type up a letter of recommendation/referral for your portfolio as it will go a long way in your marketing.

Linda's advice about the letter of recommendation is a great idea.  I can't tell you how many time my references clinched a deal for me.  I can spend tons of time marketing and generating leads but some times it is a discussion with my current clients / references that solidifies the deal for me.

I would also echo the fact that you should move forward in your comfort zone.  It is a balancing act.  The best policy is honesty.  You can let your potential client know, in a positive manner, what your experience is but then just highlight your work ethic to reassure them that you won't have any trouble moving outside the chiropractic practice billing.

Also if you can do chiropractic billing, chances are many other specialties are going to be easier in fact. For example mental health would be easier than chiropractic.  With that said, why not branch out. Many times a specialty will come to you :)
