I have heard of some offering the "billing" aspect where the provider would need to enter in the cpt codes etc and it would bill for them.  Howeer I don't know how that will work with other areas such as denials, follow up, appeals, data entry , demographics etc etc.  I haven't heard of any that will do follow up just yet.  I have read talk about it on LinkedIn but everyone is also saying the same thing that those EMR/EHR will not be able to replace us billers.

We've only been offered the EMR/EHR billing capability within the software, not a billing service.  And just because the software can do it doesn't mean the office has a staff person capable of doing the CORRECT data entry or any of the billing/posting/follow up that a billing service does.  It's strictly the data management capability.  Be sure you're out there with all the wonderful services YOU provide and how you are able towork with them AND their new software so they get the most bang for their buck!

We have had several EMR companies try to "team up" with us as a billing service.  Of course they want us to push their software, but we never got deep enough in the conversation to see if they were going to "Push" us as the service.   ???

I was just saying in another topic that I have a client who has the EMR software that enters CPT codes based on his notes, well he was audited by MC, and it took me and a colleague of mines to get him out of the mess he was in. He too, was sold on the idea that EMR would replace billers, and guess who he called when he needed experts to go to court w/him? Guess who got him out of the mess that he was suckered into by the sellers of these programs? A medical biller and coder. We found his particular software was doing a massive amount of upcoding, which is a BIG no, no, as we all know.  I think it's important, as others have said, to inform our clients and potential clients of the pros and cons of EMR's, and explain to them exactly what the system is.

My ophthalmologist has been on an EMR for at least 10 years, and he still has a billing department, and he outsources his collections. He is quick to say "it's just for my notes"   ;)
