Looking for Medical Billers & Coders help with a project!
« on: May 29, 2014, 03:14:25 PM »

I'm working on a project and I'm looking for some input from medical billers and coders - it's a workstudy on Medical Claim Processing Time.  Billers or coders who would like to be included will be named as "Research Contributors" and that would really be an incredible addition to your resume or business portfolio.

I've created a form which lists the typical steps in getting a claim paid from start to finish, but I need various responses, types of claims, different specialties etc. to pinpoint what might make a difference and why.  All you need to do is pick a random claim and start tracking the actual time it takes for each step.  When you consider how insurance companies delay payment or "have no claim on file" after repeated submissions you can imagine how this could take up to six months or longer to complete.

One detail I haven't decided to include or not is productivity level. I've got an idea about coding expectations, but what about claims processing? If you code AND bill, how many claims are you expected to process in an hour? Or if you are entering from charge-slips or superbills only, what would that expectation be? If anyone could comment here or help me find an article I'd appreciate the lead.

Everyone who participates must let me know and choose a claim with a date of service between June 1 and June 15.  Please send me an email me or follow this link for more details if you are interested... http://hdmedicalcoding.com/2014/05/28/will-this-study-help-medical-billers-and-coders-get-claims-paid/

Thanks so much for reading this post! :)

Linda,

Thanks for offering to help!  The more information and data we have to go by, the better, noone is limited to only choosing one claim.  If someone wants to do one or 50, it just gives more reliability to the study overall.

I'll send you a draft of the form I created along with an instruction sheet, but I'm asking everyone to give input on details I may have missed.  I'd like to have the finalized form by the end of next week so no one will have to re-write a new form due to revisions.  Obviously, any notes or inconsistencies can be written on a separate sheet of paper.

I recently read an article on LinkedIn how a similar study was done and they found up to 90% of claims had an error prior to submission!  Thinking about it in healthcare terms, doesn't "prevention" sound like a solution?  Hmmmmm.....

The first step is finding out the errors and comparing that to the amount of time it ultimately delays the claim.  No doctor should have to wait any longer than 30 days AT THE MOST with electronic submission, EFTs etc.

Perhaps we will find a new service we can offer to our clients out of this study!

Thanks again!
