Reference lab under hospital
« on: March 10, 2011, 10:39:13 PM »
We are a reference lab working under hospital id (npi, tax).  We draw blood and also have a courier service that picks up specimens from our rural clinics and also our clients(dr off).  We have an issue with the type of bill code.  BCBS wants 131 not matter what but seem that MCR wants 141(non patients) and 131(outpatients).  We, of course, have a lab fee schedule that is cheaper than hospital fees.  If we use 131 will we have to charge hospital fees? Is that what it is saying, which is really defeating our purpose.  Our billing is on hold b/c we changed from being an independent lab( where we used 141 on all claims) to under the hospital.

That would be determined by the carrier.  I would contact them and ask.
