Background history
« on: June 08, 2011, 01:37:35 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am new to this med billing forum and new to the whole medical billing industry as a whole.  I love the posts and comments on this forum.  Everyone is very helpful and informative.  Which is a plus because most medical billing business owners that I have contacted for info or guidance have been, well lets just say not helpful.  Almost as if I am trying to take there business away.  My concern is that I am coming into medical billing w/o any background in med billing.  I am, however, a nurse that does clinical reimbursement for a facility.  For those that don't know what that is, I work for a facility to maximize the reimbursement that we get from Medicare and insurance companies.  I am very familiar with ICD-9 codes and what is generally covered by Medicare and insurance companies.  However, I have no background in actually medical billing.  I have had a life changing experience and I am looking to do something from home and I came across medical billing.  I have started a medical billing course online through medicalbillingcourse.com and I have actually purchased software with DAQ billing.  I have read most if not all of the posts regarding marketing, and my fear is that my potential clients will not want to deal with someone that has no med billing background.  Most of you all have some sort of insurance billing background, or worked in a doctors office doing medical billing and branched out on your own.

Is there anyone that does not have a background in med billing that has gone into med billing, and did it affect you gaining clients? I am just trying to get a feel on how I should approach gaining clients.  That is my next step in this process, marketing.  As you can see I have already purchased software, so there is no turning back for me, I have to make this work  :) Any help or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks  :)

I have no back ground in medical billing at all.  I have started this business 2 yrs ago but had to put it on hold due to a family emergency.  I have not purchased software because I found out that most softwares that charge are getting paid both ways and have choosen to stick with Practice mate for awhile until I find a reasonably priced software.  The only software that I probably will purchase maybe would be Kareo because yodon't have to request a demo and all that other mess because they give regular webinars about their product plus a demo can be viewed on the site.  I also took the medicalbillingcourse.com after I took a better course in 2008.  I am on my 3rd course thru my association that I feel is better because you feel out more CMS forms and it goes more into depth on billing and scenarios.  The DAQ software was too expensive to me.

I am marketing heavily and have received interest.  I think you just have to stay positive.  I am apart of a medical billing association and the members keep in regular contact and offer any help that they can to newbies.  I too have received some negative attitudes from other billing services but you just have to stay positive and focused.

Your background will give you a leg up in this business because you already know the medical "lingo"!  The actual billing is easy when you learn the current basic information.  The learning curve is steep though when it comes to getting paid on complicated claims.

The fellow billers on this site have been so great in helping, encouraging, and teaching everyone who asks.  Don't ever think there isn't more to learn though!  This is an ever changing arena so don't be afraid to jump in!

I think you background is a great foundation and you are taking the right steps to educate yourself in the areas that you need it.  My personal opinion is that a provider is going to hire you based on their opinion of you.  For many, they will ask about your experience, but you do have more than you give yourself credit for.  Your confidence in yourself is what is important to portray to them when you speak/meet them.  You sell yourself, and if you are good at that, they will buy.

Best of luck.

P.S.  The comments made below about other services not being too helpful or friendly are EXACTLY why Alice and I started helping people.  We too found that no one was willing to help or talk to us in the beginning and that is ridiculous.  We are glad others are willing to share their knowledge/advice to make this possible.

As someone who has seen both experienced and non experienced billing companies succeed, I can tell you that your chances are as good as theirs. To increase your chances you need do only one thing.. don't quit. I have seen a LOT quit after a year due to not getting a client. I won't lie it will be harder for you, but our nursing experience does give you a stepping stone to build on. Medicalbillingcourse is also a great course, as I have worked with students from there and have been over the course many times, it's very very good, so you have a lot going for you as long as you don't give up.
