help/question
« on: October 28, 2012, 03:39:32 AM »
I have a question for everyone....I just found and signed up for this forum and it seems to be very insightful.  I have over 10 years in the billing and collections field, and I am currently working as an independent contractor at home for a billing company. I want to try to do billing on my own but need to know if I can stay as an independent contractor and find business or should I start my own company and find business?  By law, am I required to have a business to get clients? I have been working for two providers for the billing company, but with all the hours and work I put in for the company, I don't feel the pay is great and maybe I could do the same work, but more profit because it is my client??

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need to look at what you can afford in start up costs, you'll need all the same things a private contractor would need as you do a business, but having your own business might appear more professional and appealing to your clients in the long run. You'll need t obtain your own software, business registrations, insurance (liability and business insurance), compliance setup/procedures, etc.   I THINK the diff between being a contractor and your own business come down to accounting/taxes really but you should talk to an accountant for those issues. You'll also need to have your own contracts for each client.
