how to code a 5 year old born to a addict mother
« on: October 22, 2010, 02:47:13 PM »
My question is we evaluated this child for speech problems and we want to reference it back to her being born to a cocain addict mother.  The parents put in her history that she is adopted and was exposed to cocain as a fetus.  How can we code this to show her history might affect her speech now.  We can't find a code and I thought that there was a code that could be used.  Would really appreciate any help that we can get.

760.75--Noxious influences affecting fetus or newborn via placenta; cocaine.

While this is a newborn code, there is also 760.71-fetal alcohol syndrome-that I know you can use even after the baby is no longer a newborn, so it makes sense that you could use the cocaine code after the baby is no longer a newborn, too, especially as a secondary code.
