Private Ambulance billing to patients

Are private ambulance companies required to bill patients for Medicare copays?
. It is confusing because they are obligated to accept as full payment what Medicare pays.

You may be a bit confused by what Medicare "pays" and what  is "allowed. Ambulance companies are mandated by Medicare to "accept assignment", meaning that they must accept the ALLOWED amount as payment in full. Medicare will pay 80% of the allowed amount and the patient or the supplemental insurance will pay the 20%. Does that make sense.

Example:
Charge by ambulance company $3000
Medicare allows $2000
Medicare pays 80% of the allowed amount $2000 which is $1600
Secondary or supplemental pays 20% of the allowed which is $400 and the ambulance company MUST write off the difference of $1000 which is the difference between $2000 and $3000.
