Question
Can we bill for a Physicians Assistant locum tenens and how? I was told that we have to have an MD.
Thanks,
Judy

Answer
Hi Judy,
Thanks for your question. I'm not sure if I understand your question. Are you asking if you can use a PA in a locum tenens position? If so, the answer is yes, as long as you follow the guidelines set by your state for PA’s. State law determines supervision and scope of practice for PA's but it looks like the majority of states require on-site MD supervision. You would bill the same as you would for a PA that was in a permanent position. You will need to credential with the insurance companies that require PA credentialing and bill under the PA’s name when required. Otherwise bill under the supervising MD's name. There is not a specific modifier to indicate PA locum tenens (Q5 is for physician locum tenens).
Hope that is helpful.
Thanks
