Are you talking about getting certified through AAPC or AHIMA ? If so, yes, they are very difficult, take lots of study and you need a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
Are you interested in becoming a certified coder? I know you have been looking at billing. Just a thought..every office needs billers. I don't know an office that uses a coder.  I am not saying that it is not a good profession but your job opportunities are less, usually with a large clinic or office or a facility.
Recommend you look at codingcertification.org for more information.

Thanks for the information.  Yes,  it is AAPC. Merry,  do you think getting certified in coding will help with opening
your medical billing service?  I believe you really have to have experienced with coding to get
a job. The school my be suspect they say the coding class takes about
16 weeks to finish and they prepare you for the test right after.

I still want to do medical billing but, since this was offered to me
I thought I'll check it out just to see if it could benefit me later.

It is not a negative at all to be a certified coder. You are looking at a long time though to go through this. Depends on the time you want to allow for your studies and how soon you want to start your business. Why not start with medical billing and then see where you want to go with this. Our course at medicalbillingstudycourse.com takes you through the coding process but remember, a biller is not a coder.

I do not recommend starting a billing business and starting to learn coding at the same time. Take baby steps which ever way you decide to go.

I personally think you should focus on one thing..whether it is billing or coding and then at some time merge the two if you want.
