Has anyone heard anything about a new rule that states as of 9/14/09 Medicare requires xrays for Chiropractic services?  I live in Iowa and this is what customer service told me but I can not find any written documentation on it anywhere. HELP!!

Years ago Medicare used to require DC's to have xrays to support need for treatment, but they did away with that 10+ years ago.  When our local carrier switched last year we had the new carrier denying claims for xrays.  We had to call and actually got the Congressman involved.  Eventually they fixed the problem.  I am not aware of Medicare changing the requirements for xrays for DC's so I would call back and ask them to point you the to CMS ruling that states xrays are required.  It would be in the LCD's and they are posted on line, so make them find it and point it out to you.

Good luck

Thanks Michele.  We did just stumble across something on the ICN website that states as of 9/15/09 the patient either has to have had an xray within the last twelve months or if the xray date is older than a year, the date must be removed from the claim form.  Makes no sense to me whatsoever but I just removed the old dates and resubmitted.  Will see if that works.
