Contracts

Does $500 to do up one contract seem a little high to anyone? I contacted an attorney earlier today about doing my contracts and they replied that they charge $500, but if they would be doing several they would give me a better price.  I don't know how many contracts I am going to need....

There are many contracts out there, with each has its own specifications, firstly do little bit of study that would help you to have better insight, because evidently you can save money and time..

$500 is pretty reasonable depending on where you live. The going attorney rate can be anywhere from $200-$400 an hour. I paid $1100 for my very first contract, but after that I now keep my attorney on a retainer and so then each contract I do with every client, every question, situation, he's available to me.  Consider this.. how much would it cost you to go to court? Then $500 will sound reasonable.

That is good advice Linda.  I am finishing up my contracts and hope to take them to an attorney soon.  I know that some attorneys offer the first 30minutes free. I think its going to take more than 30 minutes but I will be taking up their offer.

You can offer to barter with the attorney, there are some networking opportunities for both of you. What i did was sit down, I didn't exactly write a contract..instead I made a "list" of things I wanted in my contract, list of responsibilities of both my company and the provider and then I made notes of all the other things I could think of that would go wrong that I wanted addressed in my contract.  Alice and Michelle's book on how to write a kick butt contract is WONDERFUL.. it really is, even with over 25 years in this business I found myself finding things I could add or modify in my contract. Once I had what I wanted I went to my attorney and he took all of my notes/lists and composed a contract. Mind you, before that I had seen some sample contracts floating around on the internet and even took one with me to him.  Those samples you can find are maybe 3 pages tops..well i walked out with a 9 page contract and now years later it's 14 pages, so that should tell you something important. The attorney of course followed my guidelines but also added in contractual items dealing with state and federal laws that i couldn't have even imagined existed. I actually SHUDDER every time I hear someone ask for a "copy" or "sample" contract.   Later on I went back to school to get enough credits to become a paralegal and contract law then became my specialty because I found it so intriguing. There really is so much more to a contract that you can't even imagine.

I had to pay over $1200 for my contract.  I even got charged when I called the attorney to tell him he left out a few things I wanted in the contract.  Then I had to pay for the revision and time and labor to add in a few lines.  He also ordered a Corporate Minutes book for me and charge $15.00 just to send a check to the company.

BUT i bet with the $1200 he will stand behind it. Meaning if you have to go to court he will back the contract up. If not, you got ripped.
