Who do the Checks Go to?
« on: January 17, 2012, 03:31:49 PM »
Hi, I'm a practitioner with a corporation, an individual NPI # and a group NPI #.  I'm wondering, why when I send out an electronic bill to an insurance company, sometimes the check comes to my company, and sometimes they come to my personal name?  I always use the group NPI for billing.

This is an even more urgent question for me now because I'm about to hire other practitioners to work for me.  I'd like for the reimbursements to come addressed to my company, not to the individual providers.

It really depends on how the insurance company has the information loaded.    We have a medical psychologist (his business) and we have licensed professional counselors on staff.   sometimes we get a check in a counselors name.   We have our group set (at the bank) showing all providers information.  Same tax id, same group npi, and individual npi's.  For almost 5 years I have tried to get the companies to get the information correct.  I say stamp it and deposit.

I agree with the last post. I would verify with the insurance company how your contract is set up.( If you are contracted). You of your staff should contact the provider relations department of the insurance company to make the corrections. Sometimes a W-9 will need to be submitted with a letter or sometimes a new batch of paperwork will need to be filled out.
Since you are hiring practitioners, I would make sure you are signed up correctly with Medicare, too.
Also,  I would check the CAQH site to make sure that your information is correct there.

Good luck

It's great to see all the responses agreeing.  Each insurance company will have you set up a particular way.  Call the ones who don't have it the way you want it and fix it NOW before you bring in the other doctors.

If Medicare is one who doesn't have it the way you want it, get on them first, they take forever to fix things!
