Visit code for vaccines
« on: September 29, 2009, 05:47:33 PM »
I assume this has a pretty simple answer...

If a patient came in for a well visit & did not receive the vaccines they needed for whatever reason.  The patient returns two weeks later just for vaccines.  Assuming the patient sees the physician again, what visit code do I use for this encounter?  In addition, if the well visit ICD code was used for the first visit, is there a standard "Vaccine NOS" code to use?

Thanks in advance.

If they are returning strictly for the vaccines, no other reason, then there wouldn't be another visit code.  The visit was done on the previous visit.  However, if the physician saw the patient for any other reason in addition to the vaccines, then you should bill that accordingly.  The insurance company won't pay twice because the patient, for whatever reason, didn't get the vaccines at the original visit.  I have had this happen with my own children.  Ran out of vaccine, we had to return a week later.  Only saw the nurse, received the vaccine, and only the vaccine was billed.

Thank you!

So, no visit code.  What about an ICD to connect to the vaccine codes?  Is there a general code for vaccines, or do I have to look for individual ICDs for each one?  Or do I put in the preventive care diagnosis code?

The diagnosis will depend on the type of vaccine you are providing.  If it is for a flu shot the dx code would be V04.81.  If it is for a Pneum vaccine the dx code would be V03.82.

Hope this helps.
