I have been approached by a new Doctor who is a Hypnotherapist. She wants me to assist her in creating her SuperBill for her practice. Anyone out there worked with this specialty? My initial understanding is that she cannot diagnose - she can only practice from referrals by a Physician, who would provide the diagnosis. Other than 90880 procedure code, what other codes are commonly billed? Range of fees would be really helpful as well. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't dealt with this specialty but I can't imagine what other codes there could be. Are they going to do the superbill so that patients can submit their own claims, or for the biller? That will make a difference on what info you put on the superbill.

90880 is the only cpt that can be used. Your not really clear on the credentials of the provider, you state they are a "doctor" but then you mention he/she cannot diagnose, the cpt code can be used for diagnostic purposes but only if the provider is within the scope of their licensure for that state. Bottom line is that if you intend on doing billing for hypnotherapy, you want to verify benefits with each patient, some plans will pay for it and some will not, some will go by the diagnosis, some will want a referring physicians diagnosis..it's really best to contact each plan to verify the benefits. I billed for a hypnotherapist, but she was strictly fee-for service, no insurance. She tried to do insurance but it was just too inconsistent, she found that the market was better to go cash only because normally people resort to hypnotherapy as another means and don't really expect insurance reimbursement, for those who were unsure she would give them a superbill to submit on their own.

The Hypnotherapist is a PHD and practicing in the state of PA. This input has been helpful.....I'm thinking she needs to be a cash practice.

PHD's can do other therapy's, but if they are strictly doing hypnotherapy you'll want to evaluate the best route for her practice.
