Can I use these codes for massage therapy?
« on: March 31, 2008, 07:34:21 PM »
Question
I am a nationally certified medical massage therapist in Conneticut, also i am a registered nurse. I am having difficulty with a particular p.t. in my  local area. I do insurance billing for workers comp, & auto. I use the term manual therapy because i do manipulate the soft tissue but not the joint. The P.t says that i am not to be using the designated codes that theses codes are pt. Can you direct me?

Joan

Answer
Hi Joan,

My cousin is also a LMT and I have billed NF & WC for many LMT’s.  The codes that we used were the manual therapy codes, 97140, 97124 since both of these codes most accurately describe what was being performed.  WC & NF have rules that allow certain specialties to bill certain codes.  If you were billing codes that were not in the range of your specialty then your claims would be denied.  For example, if a chiropractor tries to bill PT codes they are denied.  There are certain codes allowed by WC for a chiropractor.  I think you are fine billing the manual therapy codes since WC allows your specialty to use those codes.

Thanks
Michele

LMT billable services are dictated by the scope of practice by state law.  In Ohio, LMTs can only perform 97124 and 97140.  You may want to search your state guidelines.
