I spoke to someone in a nearby childrens hospital and she said that they have already started using ICD-10. I was wondering if any of you have begun using it in full speed yet?
If so, are all the carriers accepting ICD-10 or am I to be a bit cautious for now and just keep up with ICD-9?
Any comments / help is appreciated.

All of the payers I deal with for physician billing through a 1500 form still use ICD-9 - I haven't heard of any payers even testing with ICD-10 yet. I can't speak for facility billing (UB04) since I don't have any clients that require that type of billing.
The person you spoke with might have been referring to the new 5010 claim specs that take effect on 1-1-2012. I have seen some software vendors rolling out these 5010 changes as "5010/ICD-10 Implementation Upgrades". The 5010 transaction set encompasses the format changes for submitting the new ICD-10 codes, but like I said, I'm unaware of any providers even testing the actual new codes. You should receive some type of notification way in advance from your payers and software vendors when they will be ready to test or accept the actual ICD-10 codes.

Yeah I don't think anyone is taking ICD10 yet..(aside from testing) I'm even betting the implementation date is going to get postponed like every other new thing.

I believe patti hit it on. HIPAA 5010 is now in exiatence. As for ICD-10 this is not new it actually started back in 1993, we were the only ones to wait to use it and that point is proven as even now ICD-10 is outdated and many are now moving to ICD-11 while we are just implementing 10. With the implementation of EHR, and HIPAA 5010 and the total cost in hundreds of thousands of dollars that many facilities have budgeted I beleive it will happen on it's deadline. Another thing to keep in miond is training for 10. It seems like every one under the sun is trying to make a buck off of it offering training, certification, etc. My advice, stick to a relaible source becuase I have found that many of these facilities/Educators have the slightest idea what they are talking about. I mean afterall, I would hope that one that is in this business would know their medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
