Software question
« on: May 26, 2011, 10:29:52 AM »
I am starting a new medical billing business and i am overwhelemed with choices when it comes to software. There are so many reviews..by your experience what would you recommed for software for a new company? I need a company that will provide training and has a good tech support. I have been looking at daqbill because the course i take uses it. But they want 4000 just for the software and then you still have to pay a minimum of 250 dollars per month..nut you do have unlimited users and unlimited tech support. It just seems so expensive for a new company starting out. I dont want to go cheap eitheir but i am in this business to make money. I have been looking at kareo but they charge per provider and i heard they dont do much traoning..so confused...any suggestions? I want to make sure i buy a good product from the beginning because i hear that down the road changin softwares can be a very expensive thing to do and very difficult.  Any recommendations for a good software?

The best thing I can recommend anyone starting out to do is to collect and gather as many demo's as you can and really put each one through the test.  I personally like DAQ and Kereo the best. When you say training you need to really look at what the company provides and what you need. If you have never worked with PM software ever, then you should make sure you have a good education in medical billing first of course because most companies are only going to train you on the functions of the software. I have seen people starting out who expect the software company to train them from the ground up and that's just not going to happen. You also hit on the next important thing I would have mentioned also.. while I know starting out funds are limited and you want to start with something and grow into it, but you must look at the big picture because like you already mentioned, transitioning later can be even harder!  That is ONE thing I wish I had considered because I have been through 3 or 4 conversions and the work involved is just overwhelming.. do it right from the start OR wait until your funds allow for a good starting software.  As tempting as it is to go with one of those "free" software's or really cheap ones.. in the long run it will cost you more in TIME and money!  I wish I could say what IS the best software but it's simply a matter of your own preferences. One of the things I find MOST software's to lack that I really need is reporting features and access for my clients. Today's provider needs to feel in somewhat control and having access to their files is important to them and it's a great marketing feature for you.

Yes, i have been training at medicalbillingcourse.com and they are awesome....they do train ypu in daqbill which seems like a great software but seems really expensive...i am between daqbill and kareo i have been getting good review for both. However, it seems that kareo seems more affordable and a lot of people told they keep using them in the long run and they are happy...i have seen their training videos but i will request a demo..i just such a big decision to make and you don't want to make a mistake from the beginning. I also heard good things about lytec but i heard their upgrades are expensive....i thimk i will stick with kareo for my business as a lot of people have been saying good things about it...thanks for your quick response

I took that course and the DAQ system is expensive.  Keep in mind like others have mentioned that software systems require updates and times.

It's funny because I that all of these software systems that chage get paid 2 ways. One from the user and 2.. on the back end from the insurance carriers.

As a user it depends on what you want the software and how it fits your businesses needs.

not just your current needs, must think about future.  Kareo is great, but one thing I tell people is not to expect much in the way of training, they have a unique manner to which they work, they assume you have experience, you can get training contained to the software exclusively, but if you are working with medical billing course you will get a broader training with their software.  But Kareo is EXCELLENT it's just they are not the greatest to start out with if you have never done billing at all. JMO   With DAQ you will get all your updates, and mind you with the per database charge you will pass that charge on to your client.. keep that in mind when making your decision.  DO put the demo's to the test and don't just take others word, it has to be right for you with 1 client or 20..that's key. YOU don't want to skimp on costs now to go through an expensive and time consuming conversion later.. I did this several times insisting to myself I would save money.. I did not and if I could go back and do it all over again, I would not have opened my door for business until I had the money for the software I needed.  Also billing companies today must learn to be diversified..that means ready to work with provider's already in house software or PM systems.. as you go a long and gain experience you will be able to use most programs/systems. You don't ever want to turn a client away because they don't want to use your software, I see billing companies doing this all the time and I think it's crazy!

I recommended you the Medisoft.  Medisoft is very popular and useful desktop software. This software is reasonably priced and relatively simple to use which makes it a good choice for the 1-5 provider practices.

Linda,
I have used many of the of the options out there but never DAQ.  I just went to try to get a demo and it looks like the company changed names to CompuGroup.  Does this sound right?  It looks like pm software is HPM.  Can you or someone else give me an update on DAQ?  Thank you.

I disagree with davidharvey.  I find Medisoft to be difficult and limited.  For a billing service you need a little more flexibility and options.  JMO
