Think I still need training????
« on: July 02, 2013, 12:26:41 PM »
Hello All!

I have been doing mental health billing since January 2010. I basically trained myself and have had TONS of on the job training! I have spend a lot of time on the phone with insurance companies!!!!

I ordered the training/study guide materials through AMBA and have read through most of it several times with the intention of taking the certification test....

I have now started my own billing business. I have 2 counselors I bill for now with the opportunity to pick up as many as 4 more counselors over the next few months.

I am 8 classes away from a 2-year small business/entrepreneurship degree.

I am familiar with 3 practice management systems.

I read this board and PMRNC's on a weekly basis and have learned so much that way as well.

I have taken some free "classes" through Availity and have attended information sessions about various subjects through a local mental health professional organization.

I struggle daily as I build my business (mainly as I work on marketing) with the fact that I have not had formal training.

I would like some opinions on this - some days I think that I have learned more from every day on the job training - "hands - on" than I could from any book and then other days I wonder if I could benefit from formal training...

Thanks in advance for responding!!!

I don't think there is a clear cut answer. Rather it could be you are just second guessing yourself. From what your saying your doing just fine :)  I also want to point out that I know a few billing companies who started out with NO experience and NO training and have went on to be very successful. Likewise I know other billing companies that start out with formal training by one avenue or several avenue's who either give up or just don't seem to get clients. Your ahead of the game with 2 clients already. Are the clients happy with your work? Do you have policies and procedures setup to protect your business? Do you have a compliance plan? I'm not saying formal training isn't a great benefit, however it's not always needed. I worked for insurance companies  prior to starting my business and never had one single ounce of formal training. Like you I learned by hands on experience and relied on my education from the other side to guide me and help me in marketing. The fact that you have some potential clients on the line also says something and it really sounds like you are doing great, focus on what you have already learned and remember that in this industry we are ALL learning as we go because things change so rapidly.  ;) ;) ;) :P :D ;D

Yes I think you need some training on this. There are many online classes (http://www.medicalbillingcourse.com/) available nowadays. You can take help from them.

She has been hands on billing since 2010, I mean no disrespect as I think medicalbillingcourse.com is a good course, however I think she's probably beyond an actual medical billing course. Certainly some continued education might be beneficial but with already being hands on for 2 years I just don't think a course on medical billing is going to be much of a benefit to her.  She's probably better off looking for more advanced courses and/or certifications.
