Ice Pack
« on: May 09, 2014, 08:04:26 PM »
What is the current code for an Ice Pack (given to the patient)?  I know insurance doesn't pay for them, but I need to identify it on the claim.

Thanks!

If actually applied, it looks like it is 97010. If the pack is just given to the patient, all I can find are the misc. supply codes E1399 or 99070

E1399 is not recognized, and 99070 is no longer valid.  I have used E0230 but not they don't want that either.  I know it's usually non-covered, but their holding up a whole claim for one line item.  Any thoughts?

We use 99070.  I know it's not recognized but that is what are docs use.  There isn't any better code for the simple ice pack that providers use to send home with patients.

In this case I would ask the insurance carrier what they want you to use coding-wise to get the claim processed, since they are apparently not following any conventional coding for ice packs that are not administered to the patient. You know they will not cover it but you have to be able to at least submit the charges in a format they will process, and you can't read their minds. Usually when you put it this way they're willing to help you out with the specifics, or at least put you in contact with someone who can answer the question. Maybe they prefer an NOS code with an ice pack description.
