Contracted Provider-Medical Billing Services
« on: January 20, 2009, 03:40:54 PM »
Hi,
I have a question(s) for starting a Billing Service. Do you have to become a network provider to submit claims for your physician? I am pretty sure I have to obtain my own provider numbers (BCBS, Medicare, Medicaid etc for billing purposes. When I set up to file electronically for my providers am I setting that up for me to submit the claim, not per sey for each individual provider that I am billing for correct. I appreciate all your help. Doing the billing for the providers is certainly easier than setting up your own practice.

Insurance companies don't credential billing services.  Medicare does not assing PTAN's to billing services either.  Some insurance companies require you to submit paperwork to be eligible to submit claims electronically and you may be issued a submitter number.  A billing service only needs one submitter number for a company to submit claims for all providers they bill for.

Hope that clears it up.

Yes that does....you have been an excellent help. I have set the insurance company's up with the provider I worked for to submit claims electronically, but was curious as a third party biller if I had to do that for each individual provider I would be billing for *wipes sweat from brow*

Hello Michele,

I am so excited to find your website!  My Mom just finished taking a course online for medical claims and billing and I am about 1/2 way finished with mine.  I filed claims for Vanderbilt hospital about a year and I loved the work.  I decided I wanted to do it from home so I am taking the class to help with somethings I may not have learned at work.  I am very confused about starting our own business though, we've been looking for someone to help and cant find anyone...  Please let me know what we need to do to get started, how do I go about getting providers to use us?  Clearing houses?  THE MADDNESS!!! lol
Its alot and almost everything on the net is a scam, you cant find any good help to get started, until I found you...  I really look forward to your reply, we are wanting to get this going before Spring hopefully.

Thanks,

-Jess

Jess,
Congratulations to both of you on your decision to go at this business.  We truly enjoy what we do too.  You either love it or you don't!

We had the exact same problem when we started except the internet wasn't really going yet (1994).  We got scammed, and had a difficult time finding anyone to help.  Back then it was very cut throat.  It seems that's changing a little.  There are plenty of providers out there that need experts to do their billing, enough for all of us.

With the risk of sounding like a commercial, we actually have written several books on medical billing businesses for exactly those reasons.  Many of the info out there is written by people who haven't actually done it themselves, or did it long ago.  We are still currently operating our billing business as we put out info for others.  The following links give you more detail on our books:

http://www.medicalbillinglive.com/

There is one on 'How to Start Your Medical Billing Business', one on 'Signing your First Provider' and one on '12 Marketing Strategies'.  I think those might be the most helpful for your situation.

And you can always post questions on the forum!

Best of Luck!
