Is there a code for outpatient hospital E & M? We use 99223 for inpatient E & M. This is when the patient is having outpt procedures done & is not admitted.

If you look in your cpt book. There are codes for encounters that is designated as observation status. Of course , coding this cpt code is dependent on the medical records on hand for that pt. but just for reference purposes, the equivalent of 99223 would be 99220.
Hope this helps.

Also, you cannot use 99223 for outpatient/observation status. And don't forget to use the correct POS 22 for observation codes.
Hope this helps.

I have a good understanding of how to bill for consults done by my specialist for observation patients. But I am unclear as to what to do for consults done on patients with commercial insurances when the patient is admitted under observation status. Can anyone on here help me out

Are you talking about billing a consultation code for a patient that was admitted? Just not sure I got what you're asking.
