How to dispute false medical bills? (Urgent Help)
« on: June 13, 2016, 01:23:07 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I am responsible for caring for my elderly relative, who is sick and in need of constant attention. As of late, the medical bills and procedures have significantly increased. Unfortunately, I am getting incredibly fatigued and frustrated. On top of all of this, I believe the medical bills of the individual are incorrect and more than what they should be.

I really don't have the time or energy to solve this. I was wondering if anyone knew of a respected company that could accurately find these mistakes and save me much need money.

Thanks

Hello Johnny,

If you have a suspicion on the amount your provider billed to your insurance, the best person that you need to talk to would be a customer service representative at the insurance office. You may just mention to them about this concern who in turn will request for all substantiating medical records from your doctor to see if they paid only for what was truly performed to the patient.

If you don't have an insurance, you may please authorize an attorney to get in touch with the doctor's office for the necessary information so that the validity of the bills can be measured. You would not be able to get any good help from Billing companies as they are not supposed to discuss this matter with the doctor's office.

Johnny,

I have heard of individuals who work on behalf of patients in resolving medical bills but a POA must be in place for them to speak to anyone.  I personally do not know of any.  Sriram gave some good advice.  You might be able to get some help from the insurance carrier as they would be very interested if the provider is billing incorrectly or for services not rendered.

Good luck!

Per Michele's advice, Google "medical bill advocates", and perhaps enter the state you are in, and you will find different companies you can contact to help you. At my office over the years, I have dealt with several of these companies, and they are very good at what they do.

Hi everyone,

I did some research over the week and actually found some companies that answer the exact question I previously asked. If anyone is interested, visit DisputeBills.com. I personally recommend DB because they have a success rate that exceeds 70% and a very personable staff that solves these types of questions quickly/professionally. Bottom line is that I have finally found a specific company that can do this time consuming work for myself and help me finally save me money!  :)

I would make sure the company provides an NPP, I did see where they had an FAQ stating they required authorization to act on your behalf, which is fine, but there is no Notice of privacy, nor is there anything on their site to indicate HIPAA compliance and what happens to your PHI. This would concern me.
