EMR?
« on: July 24, 2012, 06:50:27 PM »
So I know this might be a bad question for a medical billing business owner to ask, but I might be taking on a new client that is switching to EMR in September. None of my clients do this so I am unfamiliar with it. What kind of changes would I have to make or how would I even do it? I know it's a basic question but like I said I'm not familiar with it. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

For us the EMR doesn't affect us.  The provider has to do the EMR but we get the billing info and do that separately.  There were no changes we had to make.

There are some EMR programs out there that are doing the charge capture and that could be the scenario for them. IMHO though it's not much of a change in the way the billing company will still act, everything else is still Full Practice Management IMHO.

Okay thanks guys. Well she told me last night that I would be using their system. Basically they would do the billing, send it to me, I would review it and add modifiers if needed and then send it to their clearinghouse. They would also need me to follow up on unpaid and rejected claims and then have patients call me with billing inquiries. I have no idea how I would charge for this. I do percentage billing with my other clients (which I hate) but I don't think that would work for this situation. Do you have any suggestions?

If you have remote access to their EMR program, it can be helpful when there are questions about charges or diagnosis you can actually look at the notes.  Just make sure you understand YOUR HIPAA responsibilities.

I don't do a percentage for various reasons one being it's illegal in my state and the other is I deserve to get paid for all my work. With that said, I too have clients where I remote access their software and do all things l would do in full practice. Even for your scenario I cannot say I would lower my pricing.
