I want to start a medical billing company. My question is this , I have a doctors office that wants me to bill for dme for them. Do I need a provider number and do I need to be in network with medicaid or other insurances to bill for the item. What I mean is they want me to give the patient say a knee brace and then I want to be able to bill for it . So maybe it is a stock and bill. Can I do this or do I need to get a dme provider number to delivery and bill. I can not find any to help with this. Any information would be helpful.

As a biller you do not need to enroll with Medicare or Medicaid, or apply for a provider number. The provider needs to be enrolled. You just bill for the services under the providers information.

The billing company does need to be on the enrollment as the billing agent though.

Yuppers, that is correct. You need to notify Medicare by a CMS application that you will be the billing service.
