Multiple Units for 90847 and 90834
« on: March 15, 2013, 03:20:17 PM »
I have a provider that wants to bill 2 units for 90834, for a 90 min session and also 2 units for a 2 hour session for 90847, different day.   They both have a MUE of 1, so I would assume they would be denied by the payer if two units are billed.  Would it be appropriate to to bill 90834, twice with a 59 modifier on one.  Also instead of 90847-2 units, would it be appropriate to bill either 90834 or 90837 AND 90847 same day, since 90834 can include family member.  Any thoughts on this?

I believe they will deny.  The 90834 states it is for 45 minutes.  Unless the patient came in for 2 separate 45 minutes sessions it would not be appropriate.  And even two separate sessions are not usually allowed.  There is a code for 60 minutes (90837) and otherwise the next thing would be crisis counseling.
