Fee Splitting
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:49:17 AM »
I thought I saw a link somewhere a while back which listed states where fee-splitting is prohibited.  Can someone point it out to me or give me that link.  Greatly appreciate your help.

Several posts on this. http://www.medicalbillinglive.com/members/index.php?action=search2

Remember that it's not illegal for the billing company, but for the physician in states where it is prohibited. The impact on the billing company of course is marketing, not good to have another billing company mention this while they are looking at your services and your charging a %. Another big down side is that IF the provider enters into this agreement/contract and there is any need to go to court, your contract will not hold up in court and be Null/Void.   And in general charging a percentage whether prohibited or not, DOES create the image of potential fraud especially when the billing company is tooting "We don't get paid until you get paid"   Used to be a good angle but with fraud on the uprise, it's not such a great marketing took anymore.   Another thing is that by finding other ways to charge you can get paid for all of your work. This is how most service businesses operate, your worth the time, you should get paid for the time.

A lot of billers like to argue the fee-splitting, and focus too much on "can I do it" and never really think of all the down sides of billing on a %.  there's also many who will simply ignore it and that just puts your client in jeopardy and reduces the professionalism of your company and voids your contract.

JMHO   I'd never go back to percentage based billing.

That link brings you to the "search" if you type in fee-splitting, illegal percentage based billing, or pricing, etc., you will come up with a ton of information on the subject. There are various methods to pricing your services. I recommend the book by Alice and Michele who run this forum: http://www.medicalbillinglive.com/pricing-your-medical-billing-service.shtml
