Radiology Billing Question
« on: March 12, 2014, 02:56:16 PM »
I have a client that is a mobile radiology. They are looking to bill under a radiologist's NPI that works for an imaging center. The mobile radiology has technicians that perform the TC while the Radiologist performs the PC portion of the services.  In this instance, the radiologist pretty oversees everything, the technicians, the equipment, etc., but he is not actually part of the mobile.

Is it legal for the mobile to be able to bill for the TC portion of the services under the radiologist's NPI and have the payment for the TC go to them and the payment for the PC go to the provider?

Thanks.

The radiologist must be listed under the mobile radiology as a supervising physician.  There are 3 different types of supervision:

  • Personal Supervision means a physician must be in attendance in the room during the performance of the procedure.
  • Direct Supervision means the physician must be present in the office suite and immediately available to provide assistance and direction throughout the performance of the procedure. It does not mean that the physician must be present in the room when the procedure is performed.
  • General Supervision means the procedure is provided under the physician’s overall direction and control, but the physician’s presence is not required during the performance of the procedure. General supervision also includes the responsibility that the non-physician personnel who perform the tests are qualified and properly trained and that the equipment is operated properly, maintained, calibrated and that necessary supplies are available.

If he is set up properly then it is ok.
