STARTING A MEDICAL BILLING BUSINESS
« on: April 22, 2010, 07:56:33 PM »
HI ALL!!

I THINK IM GOING TO HAVE A PROBLEM.  I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS IN THIS MATTER.
I AM CURRENTLY EMPLOYED AT A WELL KNOWN HOSPITAL DOING BILLING, COLLECTIONS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE (FOR 10 YRS).  I HAVE A BUSINESS PHONE (CELL) AND I DISCOVERED THAT A CALL FROM MY JOBS MAIN NUMBER WAS ON THE BUSINESS VOICEMAIL. NO MESSAGE WAS LEFT AND IT DID NOT SHOW UP ON THE CALLER ID.  COULD I LOSE MY JOB DUE TO CONFLICT OF INTREST?  WHAT SHOULD I DO?  DO I DISCONNECT THE NUMBER? PLEASE HELP!!!!   THANKS.

not sure, i don't know the policy of your employer. for me conflict of interest would represent something that would "compete" or take away from your primary source of incomes revenue. It would be like me working for my provider doing the custom stair lifts, and then going to his competitor to install the stair lifts as well. If I DIDN'T work for them, that would be a job that they could have done.

Exactly, Charlene.  If you were working for the insurance company and denying the claims from the hospital, that would be a conflict.  But using your expertise for billing for other providers shouldn't be a conflict for anyone.  Just don't approach any of the hospital patients using their health info. That would be bad.

my biggest worry is why are they calling me anyway.....i mean my boss knows i have my billing service. Only thing he does not know is that I am looking to quit in 2011. he was worried about it only for that reason, not for the "competition"

THANKS FOR THE INFO.  I GOT PARANOID BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT IT IS NOT TO BE DONE (CONFLICT OF INTEREST) I DONT WANT TO LOSE MY JOB!! I TRIED VERY HARD TO KEEP MY "START-UP" ON THE DOWN LOW. I DID SHARE IT WITH ONE PERSON ON THE JOB AND I DO BELIEVE SHE WAS THE ONE THAT TOLD IT (WE HAD A DISAGREEMENT ON THE JOB RECENTLY). ANYWAY, I HAVEN'T HAD THE NUMBER THAT LONG (LESS THAN A MONTH) HOW DID THE HECK THEY GET IT AND WHY WAS IT DONE SO UNDER HANDIDLY?  I WENT TO WORK TODAY AND SHE COULDNT LOOK AT ME (GUILTY!!!!).  I FIGURE THAT SINCE I HAVENT GOT MY LICENSE YET OR RECEIVED ANY COMPENSATION THAT IT WILL BE ALLRIGHT.  I GUESS I HAVE TO DISCONTINUE THE VOICEMAIL OR SOMETHING.  NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR ME TO GET FIRED FROM MY JOB!!!  KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!  THANKS FOR LETTING ME SHARE.
THANKS PAY_MY_CLAIMS AND DMK FOR THE FEEDBACK!!!

You have to refer to your employers handbook/policies and procedures. Even if you don't work with your business or interact with work it could still be against the hospital's employee procedures because even billing any of the hospital's patients or staff could be a conflict of interest. I had to leave my job at the insurance company due to conflict of interest or "POTENTIAL" conflict of interest. I strongly suggest you research this and not just let it go.
