97039 - Laser
« on: February 10, 2010, 08:02:13 PM »
Does anyone know what to use or do for "Laser" Therapy/treatment?  My chiropractor uses 97039 for it but it seems to get denied from just about every carrier we submit it to.  What's weird is I have seen it paid by BCBS and also denied by them for the reason of: "Payment is denied when performed/billed by this type of provider".  Any ideas?

Thanks!

We always used 97026 Infrared Light Treatment.  Is this for Cold Laser?  This code worked for us in the past. We no longer have a cold laser so I don't know if the code is accurate currently.  Since 97039 is for an unlisted modality they would usually require documentation for what the modality was.

It is Cold Laser and they seem to deny it stating "Payment is denied when performed/billed by this type of provider" so I wasnt sure if it is just because it is a Chiro or if there is a better CPT to use.

In my experience it is still considered experimental, therefore not covered by most insurances.
