DME Billing for Cost of abandoned item?
« on: May 07, 2018, 04:46:08 PM »
Hello,

I have a question regarding to abandoned custom DME items. Our office ordered a custom L1970 and L2820 Arizona brace for a patient, when we called to schedule the pick up of the brace he stated that he had gone to another provider and gotten a second opinion, choosing to have surgery; both that provider and his insurance company told him to not come back and pick up the brace.  >:(

Since it is custom we're unable to simply return the brace, we contacted the supplier to see if we could work anything out with them to recoup our cost. My DME rep was told by the company that they believed there was a code we could use to bill the insurance for our cost of the item.  ?  :-\

I have never heard of this, I know since we did not dispense the brace and we do not have the DME ABN on file(we don't get this signed until we dispense) that we cannot bill for the full allowed amount from the insurance.

Can anyone advise on if they know what it is that the company rep was referring to that we can use to bill for our lost cost of this abandoned custom brace?

Thank you in advance!

Emily

Can you bill for the fitting? You might be able to, but I'm not sure, if you saw the patient on the day and already billed it but not the actual fitting you MIGHT be able to file a corrected claim, but I'm not sure how you would code that.

This might help:

Also, I would call your DMERC MAC (if it was a Medicare patient, which it seems to be) and ask them what they suggest.
