In regards to working the denials, you know that calls needs to be made to rectify payments that appear to have been made in the insurance portals but the provider denys getting. How do you split your time to make those calls when you have a full time job M-F 9-5pm. Any advise?

In regards to obtaining and maintain auths. I have been working in the MH industry for over 14yrs and the providers I have through my private business don't have office personnel..........it's just them. So does it fall on me to obtain and maintain auths for them?

That's a tough one.  The best thing I can suggest is get online access to handle as much as you can without having to physically call.  But there are always going to be calls.  That is one of the issues when juggling a job with your business.  But it's one no one else can really answer for you.  Do you get breaks where you can make a call or two?  Maybe a lunch hour?  Some insurance carriers open at 8 am or stay open till after 5 so those calls can be made before/after work.

We tell providers that we do not do authorizations.  Some billing services do but for us it doesn't work.  Usually the provider needs the phone call made ASAP when the patient calls for the appointment and that doesn't work out for us.  We've tried it, but we found that we were verifying benefits for patients that ended up never being seen and we wasted a lot of time.  Not all billing services offer authorization services.

I provide both eligibility and verifications along with INITIAL auth's for my clients as they are indeed a part of full practice management. For subsequent they get weekly and monthly reminders on which they need to obtain.

I too was once full time employed when I started my billing company. I HAD to make a choice after client #2. I couldn't market my business effectively w/out giving it 100% or the business would go to my competition. It was a gamble since I was making a nice yearly salary working as a claims examiner, but like you I found the conflict with time to be the decision maker. Unfortunately unless you can get that time in with your FT job.. you might have to make a choice like I did. Owning your own business your really expected to be available for your clients during THEIR working hours.
