clinician terminating services?
« on: January 11, 2010, 08:36:47 PM »
Hello, I have a question or probably more like opinion needed.  I have a clinician I have been doing billing for 3 years, he is terminating services, as he was behind two months and I told him I wanted to set a goal to get him caught up and he told me that was a goal that wouldn't be achieved.  I then told him it was necessary and he said he would need to terminate services even though he loved my service he claims financial hardship, although I was bringing him in quite a bit of money.  At this point he gave me 30 days notice.  I have one more cycle on the 15th that I am sending claims for.  He just sent me an email and asked if when I print out his final reports if I would also print copies of all his claims etc so he would know where to send everything, plus he has asked me to do the patient statements, which I have always done, but not to mail and give them to him, I'm sure it's so he can take address info etc.  I don't want to alienate completely, in case he decides to bring his business back when he sees how much time etc it will take him, but I don't want to make it easy and be taken advantage of.  Do you think it would be appropriate to say I would print out all claims, statements too and give them to him stuffed not sealed, that way if he wants to make copies himself he could do that, along with the regular reports that I print, aging report and payment tracking report.   I know here going forward I need to do a contract, but want to end this on a pleasant note, but not be taken advantage of......any thoughts?

Has he caught up his bill with you?  That would be my first concern.  I would make sure he has paid all past amounts due, and estimate the final bill and ask for an up front payment on that.  Then, I would provide him with he's requested since it really isn't creating any additional work on your end.  And, if you comply he may come back when he realizes you were well worth your money.  We've had that happen, and actually, two providers did it twice!  (We won't take them back a third time, it should only take once to learn!)

More importantly, what does your contract say? you may not have a choice in what you do or don't do.

thanks for the info on the subject of terminating clinician.....it went smoothly.  I am hoping he will come back when he realizes what he's missing :)  I think that's actually why it went as smoothly as it did as he wanted to keep the door open to come back.  Time will tell.

Thanks
Karen
