Medicare billing
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:53:05 PM »
We are a new HHA in Orlando, Florida and want to know when we can start billing medicare.  We are applying for medicare certification and have submitted an application with the state.  We also are in the process of getting accredited by JCAHO.  Does anyone know if we can retroactively bill medicare for patients seen before certification?  Please help!

When Medicare approves you they will send you an acceptance letter that will give you a date of participation.  Once you receive that letter you can bill for any services on that date or after.

Michele,

Do you know how long it takes after we apply to get a letter?  Medicare said that it takes up to 6 months to get certified.   Thanks for your help!

It varies depending on the Medicare carrier and if the application is clean.  Some are completed in as little as 4 weeks.  SOme take up to 6 months.
