Hi Guys,

Question, have a doc who saw a patient for 1.5 hours for an initial session for psych counseling, what do I use since you don't usually bill 90801's in units for a private insurer.  Sorry, in all the years I have been doing this, this is the first time I have run across this!

Thanks!

Joanne

90801 IS not a timed CPT code, the carrier is only going to pay their allowable and you cannot bill the 90801 in units nor use a therapy code with the 90801. It is not uncommon either to spend an hour and a half to 2 hours for a 90801, so the provider should be billing his fee for the 90801
