thinking of becoming a medical coder
« on: November 18, 2013, 09:01:27 AM »
Hi, I'm thinking of becoming a medical coder and starting to train to be one.  But first I wanted to get some feedback as to how the job is working out for actual medical coders, also what some good places to study it might be, including online.  I live in Philadelphia.
I don't have any experience in the field except for some computer data entry, mostly on Excel.  I just was recommended to try it out because I am currently unemployed and I heard there were a lot of jobs in this field.
Any ideas? Feedback?

You might read through the question and answers at this link.  If that generates more questions, come back here and ask them - or just ask them at this link:

I was just wondering, if anyone can recommend any good online beginner courses for medical coding?  Also, what is a standard price for a quality medical coding class that could possibly lead to certification?  I don't have that much extra money but at the same time I don't want to take the cheapest, in relation to something that might be more effective for me in terms of building my job skills..
Thanks for any and all feedback

Here is a hint..There are few offices that hire coders. Usually they are hired at large facilities and hospitals. ALL medical offices need billers. Is this something that you would consider? Much easier to get a job as a biller.
There are no inexpensive coding courses that I know about. And then you need to sit for an exam which is expensive and then another one for the new coding system that will be used starting in Oct. If finances are an issue, I would stay away from coding.

Yes definitely it is good job but have to update vary ra[pidly in coding field. There is lot of changes occurs by time such as from October 2014 ICD 10 will be implemented. You have to update on every topic and in coding you can get good salary.
