How Many "Numbers" Can One Professional Have?
« on: September 04, 2009, 12:48:32 PM »
Hi:

Can any one tell me, if an individual doctor pulls away from a large group and had a NPI number that was never used, supposedly under the group, should they/can they use the never used NPI number given to them by the large group, or should they start all over with new NPI number, Medicare number, etc.?  Of course, I believe it is true that they can have only one tax ID number?  Is that correct?

They are thinking of developing a small group of their own after they have completely pulled away from the large group, i.e., doctor, NP, PA.

Please help.

Thank you.

Denise

The NPI MUST match the TAX ID data.. EXACTLY. So if the group will be using another TAX ID, the NPI will need to match

The doctor has their own individual npi # that is linked to only the provider. That npi number will stay with him forever. Then, the group has their own npi #s also. For Ky Medicare, when the provider switches to a different group he will get a new Medicare PTAN.(medicare #).

When you set him up for a brand new group. You will get a tax id for the group, then obtain an NPI for the new group practice. Then, just link the providers individual npi# with the new group npi# and tax Id#. ;D

Linda:

Thank you for your response.  Are you also saying that the Medicare/Medicaid numbers must always match the Tax ID as well, if anything changes?

Thank you.

It sounds like they will be forming a new group, so they will have to credential the new group with Medicare/Medicaid and then link themselves to the newly formed group.
