You have to be listed as the billing agency when providers enroll to have claims sent electronically to Medicare/medicaid.

Do you mean how do you become a certified Medical Biller, or how do you register with Medicare?

Is there a application?  I went on the Medicare site and I didn't see a form for registering your business as a biller

With each client you sign, you will do a Medicare Change which will notify Medicare of your business as the billing agent.

Hi Newbie again

I have a question.  I want to have my own billing service but what do you still call it yours when you go to the business and do they're billing?  I want to be able to do the billing from their office.  I figure I can save them money on getting me health insurance, unemployment.  I will be a independent contractor.  Has anyone ever heard of anyone doing this?  I will just go to the businesses and do their billing on weekend and at night when the staff is gone.  I wouldn't have to buy software and I would charge them a flat fee per day.  How does this sound to anyone?

No, it won't save them money at all. As a Business you could save them money, the idea of outsourcing is to increase efficiency and cut costs. In today's economy and all that is going on more doctors will be cutting staff. Also their are various liability issues for a practice to hire an employee to work from home, they pay increased liability, taxes, benefits, it's just not going to be affordable to them.

So...I will get the software and the books.  Do the mailing and wait on the Doctors to call me?  I have done Medical billing.  I also have an accounting background.  I am also still in school for coding.  I think I will intern at a billing service to get the run of it.  So my plan to start ordering the books...read some more and get my survey together and my website.  I gave myself until Spring of 2010.

I need a to know what was the first two steps you or anyone did as a home biller.

I like all the feed back it is just what I needed.

It isn't going to be easy. You actually have to get out there and market. You will also need to register your business, make sure you are HIPAA compliant, create a contract, compliance plan. There are a lot of steps involved with running your own billing company. As for interning with another billing company, yes it's possible, however it will not be easy because many don't want the added liability of an inexperienced biller unless they are on-site.

The reason I mention internship because I school use to do it but they stopped.  So what I have been doing this morning is getting nursing homes and Medical billing  names in my area....and see if they will let me intern at their business.
