Billing Second Opinion by Partner
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:33:10 AM »
Do I bill as consult or established patient for a request for second opinion by patient to a partner in the same practice?  Patient is currently receiving chemo therapy but has requested a second opinion now.  I believe it should be billed as an established patient but I'm not sure.

That's a tough one.  Many insurances only allow 1 consult in a certain time frame for the same condition so if you bill it as a consult it may get denied.  Also, since the patient is already with your group, it probably won't be quite as involved for the Dr.  I think I would go with billing it as an established patient as well.
