Starting Home Health Billing Service
« on: July 29, 2010, 09:07:41 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum and it looks like there is a lot of good info here. I have been doing medical billing for a small home health agency for almost a year. I recently passed my Certified Professional Medical Biller (CPMB) and Home Care Coding Specialist (HCS-D) exams. I am studying to take the CPC exam in 8 weeks. So here is my question:

I would like any advice or info you may have on starting a home health billing business. I really like home health and educating others. I have seen some agencies get buried in our area by fraud, horrible billing errors and RAC reviews.

I currently do direct date entry billing and would like to be able to do so from home, does anyone know if this is possible?

The agency that I would for uses NGS, National Government Services, as the intermediary with EDI. Is it possible to use this with a home-based business?

Would I have to register with Medicare to become a provider in order to bill through EDI?

I really don't want to have to use a software with a bunch of stuff i don't need, though I have looked into EZClaim. Any advice?

I am also seeking a mentor who does billing for home health agencies. Any help or advice you could offer would be much appreciated. Thanks.

if you are only doing claims submissions, then EZ claims would work fine for you, but if you are seeking to do full practice...it probably wont
I do agree on not wanting a software system that has a bunch of offers, but none utilized by you nor the providers. I don't want to pay for fluff

Hi bnstraining,

I currently work as a Home Health Biller/Collections/AR Specialist  :)

I too am looking to start my own medical billing company once my contract is up at my current job. For what its worth, I can let you know what we use.

I think you could use OfficeAlly with the program as your clearinghouse. I've heard its free. We use a different clearinghouse which the company pays something like $150 for the year.

Thanks for the responses. I am continually searching. I am using IVANS with the AT&T Global Network, does anyone know if this can be purchased by individuals?

I believe IVANS charges a monthly fee for use.  You don't need to enroll as a provider with Medicare to submit claims, you need to apply for an electronic submitter id.  The forms are available on the Medicare carrier's website for your state, under the EDI section.

I've been doing billing for PT, OT and ST therapists for 4 years from home I use EZclaim (get the advanced version) It works fine.  The patient statements are not great, but for what I do, it's ok.
Also, use Office Ally for my electronic billing.

Michele is right, IVANS charge a monthly fee depending on what services you want them to provide for you.

I use IVANS at home for home health billing for the state of Michigan. You can choose to use their lime portal access for claims submission and everything for a fee or you can stick to their AT&T internet dial-up access.

You do not have to be a provider to sign up with IVANS, you will be a "THIRD PARTY" however you will need the provider you will be billing for to get you access and registered with medicare for your own userid and password into FISS /FSSO
