Need experience for start up??
« on: September 23, 2010, 02:59:04 PM »
Hi, I am new to the forum, but am very glad I found it.  I have a diploma in billing coding, and also an associates in Health infomation management, from my local community college.  A person I know wants to start there own billing business, and has asked me to come on board to do the billing.  I graduated one year ago, and have not found work yet, so I have no experience, I hesitate because of this.
Billing is what I want to do, is the education enough to get on board. I would be working from home, so training little to none. He does know my lack of experiece and we are planning to start out slow.  Is my education enough for this endevour?? Any suggestion would be helpful, I certainly don't want to set either of us up for failure.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

You are in a difficult position.  Education is great, but experience is priceless.  I would be concerned if you don't have anyone to ask questions.  Does your friend have any experience?

Michele, thanks for your response, no he has no experience.  Is this even something I should be considering without experience?

I have thought about volunteering at a local billing company, (if they will use me).  What would be the best way to approach them?  How long would I need to work with them to have a good grasp of billing?  I did approach my area hospitals last summer, they said they did not have any openings for volunteers at the time.  I will have to tell you, this is not an easy field to enter, you have to get the experience, and it is not easy to get.

thanks for your help, have a good day :)

I'd say it's a big risk on both of you, if he has no experience and you'll be working outside his office/home office hopefully he will be carrying the proper insurance, a lot can go wrong with the two of you not having experience and working in different places, there will be legal liabilities on both of you. My suggestion would be for you two to work together, continuing education, attending seminars, etc.  I don't mean this to come out wrong, but I've seen a lot of people starting out hire someone to do the work and with both of you not having experience it will be hard for him to meet payroll because you could be looking at a long time before landing that first client.  I think if I were you, I'd probably seek a position in a doctors office or hospital first, you might have to take an entry level position to start but the experience in the long run will be key if you really want to start a business or join one.
