Starting a billing co for my own business

I have used several billing companies for my medical business but am tired of all the time I need to spend doing follow up.  Any advice on starting to submit our own claims.  I am familiar with codes and forms.  We could probable use electronic forms.  Not sure what software or if we even need software.  thanks

Are you doing follow-up on insurance claims and patient billing, because your billing company does not do that?  Or are you doing follow-up on your billing company because they are not doing a good job and can't be trusted?

Calculate the time you are spending on doing follow-up, whatever follow-up is.  Then, as a separate figure, calculate the time you will spend learning all the things you say you don't know in your post.  Then add in all of the time you will spend doing your own billing.  Then figure if that time will be less time or more time than what you are currently spending on follow up.

You should do your own billing only if it will take less time than you are currently spending on follow-up.

It's also a good idea to review your state's laws on claim forms. Here we are only allowed to submit paper claims in limited circumstances, so software is required for all but the smallest practices. Also, how many claims do you send out per month? Just trying to gauge the workload/size of your practice because that will dictate what your best software options are. Also, what specialty are you billing for? Some specialties have more frequent policy and coding changes than others, which will impact how much time you need to spend researching and updating your information.

Horizon..what is your specialty?

I'm confused as well. MOST practice management companies should be doing both the billing and follow up, if not your going to lose business to the ones that do. If you are just doing follow up for a billing company, they could easily take back that part of the business and you would have none. If you are are billing company providing only follow up your also losing money because again, this should be done by the same service.
