What is the difference between rendering provider and servicing provider?

I believe they are interchangeable terms.  I believe most people refer to the provider who treated the patient as the rendering provider.  I believe the term servicing provider is used more for a provider who is supplying the patient with something such as DME, etc..

I can give you a personal example of the difference between them, according to Medicare. My husband is a psychotherapist who has been in private practice for 20+ years. When he decided to incorporate a few years ago, he was required to get a EIN (Tax ID#) for the Corp. What we discovered through initially denied claims was that Medicare wanted him to use his NPI# and his name as the "Rendering" provider (Box 24J on CMS-1500 form) as he had used for many years, and his new corporate EIN# and corporate name (i.e., John Smith, LCSW, Inc.") as the "Servicing" and "Billing" provider (Box 32 and 33 on CMS-1500.) This way the checks were issued to the new corporation, but Medicare still had to have an individual on record for rendering the actual services.

Before he incorporated, he only used his personal NPI and SS# for both Rendering and Servicing provider. So, whether they are the same or different from one another depends on the circumstances!  ;)

As another example, if several doctors are rendering services in a group practice, clinic or hospital, the name and NPI# of the individual Dr. is used for the Rendering, and the name, address and NPI or EIN# of the Facility where the services are being rendered is used for the Servicing provider (Box 32,) which would typically be the Billing provider as well (Box 33.)

I hope this helps.
