: collecting copays from someone with Medicare and Illinois Medicaid
: cam6319 July 17, 2012, 04:13:20 PM
I work in a mental health agency and am billing for a psychiatrist.  My question is this ~ The patient has both Medicare and Illinois Medicaid.  If I am going to collect a copay - which copay would I collect?
Would I have to just collect the Medicare copay or can I collect the copay from both (medicare and illinois medicaid?)

Each states laws regarding Medicaid vary but in NY you cannot collect from a patient with Medicare / Medicaid.  You definitely cannot collect both.  If the patient has a copay with Illinois then I believe you can only collect that.

With any Medi/Medi, it's much easier to let both pay/consider and then collect any copay's from Medicaid but usually there isn't any.

In IL Medicare will pay forward it to Medicaid they will pay or write off and you're done there is generally no copay if there is it may be literally a few cents. Basically you can't collect in this situation.
