office location.....?
« on: May 14, 2013, 09:32:00 AM »
Hi, I was wondering if there is a rule that I am unware of as far as what code to use for office location when the clinicians office is in the home.  Does anyone have a suggestion if I should use the 11 or 12 for a location?

thanks
Karen

Here is a link for the CMS-defined Place of Service codes.

http://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coding/place-of-service-codes/Place_of_Service_Code_Set.html

Looking at the definitions below, 11 is used to denote that the patient received care in the doctor's private office (without regard to where that office is located) on an ambulatory basis.  Meaning, the patient came to him - he didn't come to them.  POS 12 would be used in a situation like home health care where the doctor comes to the patient in their home, they don't come to him.

12 - Home - Location, other than a hospital or other facility, where the patient receives care in a private residence.

11 - Office - Location, other than a hospital, skilled nursing facility (SNF), military treatment facility, community health center, State or local public health clinic, or intermediate care facility (ICF), where the health professional routinely provides health examinations, diagnosis, and treatment of illness or injury on an ambulatory basis.
