Help-Expired NPI
« on: February 11, 2009, 05:27:01 PM »
Michele:

I will be credentialing a nurse practitioner whose NPI has expired. He will be going with a "group" that has their own NPI.  How do I handle this?  Can the nurse practitioner just be credentialed under the group's NPI?  Will both the old and the group's NPI be requested on any forms?  Also, in this case which form(s) is correct, the 855B, etc.?

Thank you.

Denise

Hi,
NPI numbers do not expire.  They stay with the provider no matter what.  The provider needs to update the information at NPPES whenever anything changes.  So if they change practices, they just need to sign in to NPI & change their practice address.  When they credential with insurance carriers they would get linked to the group NPI so payment for their services goes to the group.
