Title: Diagnosis code for PPD test
Post by: RCLEARH2O on May 13, 2008, 11:10:53 AM
How do I code for a PPD test? MD coded as v01.1 When I looked up code it's for tuberculosis disease not just the test. Patient does not have TB.  I used CPT code 86580 but need a diagnosis code. Also when patient comes back to have read do we charge for the reading? We don't have a nurse in  the office so MD will read.

Thank you

86580 is the correct cpt code. Below are the code that I use. I work in Peds and I mainly use V03.2 or 795.5 for my pts. We send all of our parents home with a ppd postcard with instructions on how to read. The card also states that if there is any type of reaction to call the ofc. If the reading is normal then the parent mails the postcard back to us. If the pt has to come back into the ofc for a reading because the findings were abnormal to the parent we bill a 99211 for a nurse visit. Should they need to see a physician you would bill as you would any other ofc visit 99211 - 99215.

796 is a non-specific code that cannot be used to specify a diagnosis
795.5 Nonspecific reaction to tuberculin skin test without active tuberculosis
V01.1 Contact with or exposure to tuberculosis
V03.2 Need for prophylactic vaccination and inoculation against tuberculosis [BCG]
V74.1 Special screening examination for pulmonary tuberculosis

Thanks so much for helping Robin out with this.  Somehow I missed this post and it went unanswered.

Robin, sorry for the delay, hope the answer posted was helpful.
