What is the proper way to look up a code in the ICD-9_CM book?

I'm having a really hard time with my medical coding course. When i finally think that i understand it; I get my homework back and i've failed it. I've been told that i'm making this harder than what it is, but I just don't get it. Please help

There is not a straight forward answer to your question.  Do you mean how do you look up an ICD9 by code, or by word?  If you are looking up a diagnosis (by word) then you would use the back of the book which is listed alphabetically, then go to the section of the code it gives you to verify that you have coded it correctly and to the highest level of specificity.  If you are looking by number, then you would do the same.

For example if you are looking up osteoporosis you would go to the index and go to the 'o' section, find osteoporosis and should see the code 733.0.  Then you go to the 733.0 section and you will find that you need a fifth digit to specify the type of osteoporosis.

If you are having difficulty then it is probably that you are trying to hard.  Your on line course should offer you assistance though on figuring out just where you are going wrong.

Good luck
