Hi Tanya,

Congratulations on completing your course.  Do you have any experience in the medical field, or in business?  Not that it's required but it can be helpful.  Hard to give too much advice without a little more info about yourself.

Thanks
Michele

Hi all,
I'm Ben Colman and my business is Practice Plus Medical Billing Management, LLC. I've completed medicalbillingcourse.com, have read and reread Green & Rowell's Understanding Health Insurance and am learning all I can wherever I can. I'd appreciate  suggestions about good sources of information about medical billing. I look forward to learning from all of you and helping when I can.

Hello! I am a communty college Medical Billing & Coding Instructor and am happy that I found this site.  Things have changed a lot since my days in the medical office, so I look forward to having a forum where I can find answers to questions from students that I may not be able to answer.

Hi Folks !!!
I'm NuBiker, from Southern California. My wife is a psychologist, in private practice.
I have been doing her billing since March 2009. Before taking over the billing duties, I took a billing/coding class at the local evening adult school, and took another class at the local R.O.P.
I also do her bookkeeping, prepare the next days charts, and anything else she needs done to make her job easier. From time to time I try to remind my wife that I am retired!!! I hope this will be a part time job, but for now I am working 45-50 hours a week, LOL.
I feel like I am reinventing the wheel!!!
I am so glad to find this forum, I hope I can pick up some pointers, as well as contribute back to this community.
Best Regards,
Nu

Hello All:  I'm a newbie......  Is there an area here to set up your profile, i.e. put your picture etc and background on...?

I have a full time job as an administrative assistant at the local high school.  I was asked by one of our school psychologists to learn billing for his private practice.  That was three years ago....went by fast!  Anyway, I now have three clinicians that I am doing billing for.  I am really enjoying this site.  Constantly learning, sometimes get scared when I realize what I don't know!  So far the clinicians I am working with are very small and have a small private practice along with another job either in the school system or another facility. I purchased Therapist Helper by Netsmart Software three years ago.  I am currently updating to electronic billing.  I am beginning to wonder if that was a smart move, it's actually pretty expensive, and I'm not sure it's necessary right now.  I think I was duped into believing it was going to mandatory very soon, but from reading on this site, doesn't look like it's happening that quickly.  At this point in time, I am charging by the session, but I don't have any contracts.  I am  HIPPA compliant.  I am hoping to get either 1 large practice or a couple more small practices and eventually retire from the high school and work full time doing the mental health billing.  I felt like I was running along pretty smoothly, but am wondering if you think it's necessary, other than to protect myself, to have a contract?  I felt because the practices are small that I was ok doing it this way?  Any thoughts.....

If you click on profile, there is a way to upload a picture, and some other housekeeping items.

Anyway, glad you are enjoying the site.  In reference to whether or not you need a contract:  even though you are small, it is better to have a contract.  Especially since you plan to grow.  A contract is protection, and without you are vulnerable.  I know you are only working for a couple small 'friends', but this is the time to iron out a contract so you are ready for the bigger fish.

Good luck

I am curious, are most of you members certified in someway in the medical field, i.e. billing, coding etc.  I have no education, self taught.   No certification.  Do you think that's necessary if I've been doing this for three years now and have been pretty successful? I noticed Kaplan has a course, but it's pretty expensive and I'm kind of thinking it's nothing I can't learn on my own

Thanks for your thoughts
Karen

Thanks Marge...

Kward, this is JMO on self taught billing. Nothing beats experience No matter how much you are taught, until it is applied it won't mean anything to you. Now on the other side though, there are a lot of people who jump into this field who totally screw up a providers revenue. I have a friend who is now trying to clean up a mess a biller made. I started in Medical, and ended up with DME billing experience. I have never done Chiropractic, but as soon as a provider contacted me, I was downloading NC medicaid guide to billing, medicare guide, its LCD's, and the most common DX, billing errors, bundled charges, issues etc. I have a very nice guide for billing for a chiro. I NEVER accept a client that I can potentially drive into the ground. What stands me out above a lot of billers is that my bottom line isn't the money, but my reputation. If I keep that up, the money will come. I love to learn, and I love challenges. I will take a class, a course, purchase a book, talk to another experienced biller if I feel that I have a provider that is more than I can handle. I will with no remorse gladly say to someone " that isn't my current field of expertise in billing, but I know a wonderful biller that you can contact" I do not like learn as you go. You are dealing with someones livelyhood, their revenue. An error on a billers part can hold up AR for month's. I have had 2 referrals from this group because of my knowledge in DME billing. They don't like DME and refuse to do it, so they gladly send them my way (thanks so much). Do they view it as losing 2-3K per month?? No they don't, and this is why both referral sources are successful!
