Access to Insurance Carrier Websites
« on: January 18, 2011, 10:23:24 AM »
Hello all!  I have just started a medical billing company and I bill for 5 providers.  Before I get too deep into it, I want to make sure I am doing everything correctly.  How can I get access to all the insurance carriers websites.  So far, the clients have just given me their usernames and passwords.  I am wondering if the insurances require billing companies to sign up themselves and be given the username and password or if it is ok to use the clients information.  All the information you can give me about this would be great.  Thanks so much!

You will want to access the sites as the provider or the providers staff to look at claims, benefits etc. for ANY patient.  If you access the site as a patient, the information will be limited to coverage and benefits for the individual ONLY.

Some carriers will allow you to sign up as a billing service as well.  The only way to know is to contact each carrier.  Also, some carriers give login info to a provider or provider's staff and it is only supposed to be accessed by that person.  Our local BCBS makes us get a login for each person, and that person has to sign an agreement with them for HIPAA.  Just want to make sure you are not breaking any agreements by sharing the logins.  (Other carriers allow us to share the logins so it's not always a problem.)
